Privacy#
Last updated: 29 October 2026
How the Game Works is a static website: plain pages, no accounts and no tracking of our own. This page lists everything that touches your data and why.
What this site does not do#
- It sets no cookies and uses no analytics or tracking scripts of its own. The only advertising is Google AdSense (below).
- It loads its fonts from this site, not from Google or any other font service.
Hosting (Cloudflare)#
The site is served by Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical request data (your IP address, browser type, the page requested) to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Comments (giscus and GitHub)#
Pages have a comments box powered by giscus. It is loaded from giscus.app when you scroll near it.
- Comments are stored as public GitHub Discussions in the howthegameworks-comments repository.
- Reading comments requires no sign-in. To post, you sign in with your GitHub account. giscus then keeps a session token in your browser (on giscus.app, not on this site).
- What you post is public and shown with your GitHub name. You can edit or delete your own comments on GitHub.
- See GitHub's privacy statement and giscus's privacy policy.
Email#
Messages sent to the address in the footer are received through Cloudflare Email Routing and forwarded to the site owner's mailbox. They are used only to read and answer your message, and are deleted on request.
Ads (Google AdSense)#
Pages load Google AdSense, which shows ads and helps pay for the site.
- Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads, measure them, prevent fraud and, where you allow it, personalize ads based on your visits to this and other sites.
- Visitors in the EU/EEA, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google's consent message before personalized ads are shown. You can change your choice at any time through that message's settings link.
- You can opt out of personalized ads at Google's Ad Settings, and read how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
- This site receives no personal data from Google, only aggregate ad reports.
Affiliate links (Amazon)#
Some pages recommend a product with an Amazon link. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. When you click such a link, you go to Amazon, which may set cookies to credit the purchase. This site receives no personal data from Amazon, only aggregate commission reports. See Amazon's privacy notice.
Ko-fi#
The "Support me" button links to Ko-fi. Nothing is loaded from Ko-fi until you click it. Payments are handled by Ko-fi and its payment providers under Ko-fi's privacy policy.
Your rights#
If you're in the EU/EEA or the UK, you have the right to access, correct or delete personal data about you, and to complain to your data protection authority. For anything handled by this site (email messages), use the contact address in the footer. For comments, GitHub and giscus are responsible for the data they store.
Changes#
If this policy changes (for example a new ad or affiliate partner), this page is updated first and the date above changes.
